Tips For Families That Move Often

November 5, 2015

Let's face it, some of us move more than others. If you fit into that category, or may fit into it in the future, you understand the stress of making multiple moves. Take heart, however. There are things you can do to make your life easier, and your move less stressful, before you relocate.

Downsize

This doesn't mean the size of your house, but the quantity of your belongings. And it's easier said than done. But by donating or recycling items you don't need or no longer use, you'll save yourself the hassle of moving it all again another time. If it's something you haven't used in several years, or is in a box that hasn't been opened since the last move, then you can probably do without it.

Unpack Wisely

It doesn't hurt to pack a few boxes you know you aren't going to use right away. They can immediately go into storage until you've settled in enough to need their contents.

Plan Well Ahead

Don't leave things to the last minute. There's nothing worse than showing up at your new home and realizing that you forgot to have the electricity turned on. Plan your move weeks or months ahead of time, if you can, so that you'll leave plenty of time to do things like moving the utilities and internet to the new address.

Organize, Organize, Organize

Always be thinking of shortcuts you can take that will save you time during the next move: From labeling things to shredding old paperwork. Create a to-do list that everyone in the family can access, and with dates for when things should be done.

Improvise

You can improvise and safe space at the same time by using stackable drawers, collapsible chairs airless storage bags. They key is to use whatever gets the job done comfortably while taking up less room.

Have A Storage Area

Every move is different and your needs for every new location can also vary. If you need to store furniture for a few months, then know where to rent a quality storage space. You don't want to just get rid of expensive furniture and then have to replace it again in the future.

Are you a military family looking to store your belongings as you make your next move? The people at Move It Self Storage are happy to help.
