Support Nantucket Athletes At The 2015 Nantucket Triathlon

July 16, 2015

Nantucket Island welcomes a wave of summer residents and visitors each year. Whether you’re looking to take in the sights, enjoy the solitude of beautiful beaches, or hang out at quaint shops, Nantucket has something for everyone, including the athletes in the crowd. During the summer months, there is no more exciting event than that of the Nantucket Triathlon.

Sprint Event

On Saturday, July 18, the Sprint event will take place. This triathlon event begins with a .33-mile swim, starting just left of the west Jetty. Swimmers will begin in waves based on age, and will swim across the water in a grueling first leg.

After the swim, racers will jump on their bikes for a 13.4-mile bike ride through Nantucket. The race beginnings at Bathing Beach Road and ends at Jetties Beach.

Racers will then complete a foot race through town. The run distance for sprint competitors is 3.4 mile. Spectators are encouraged to line the streets of the race course. Much fanfare will be on hand at the finish line.

Olympic Distance Event

The Olympic distance race has the same components as the sprint race, but is longer and more challenging. Utilizing a similar race route as the sprint race, Olympic racers will begin around 10 a.m. on Sunday, July 19, with a .9-mile swim along Nantucket's illustrious beaches. They will follow the same path as sprint swimmers who competed earlier in the weekend.

Once they've completed the swimming portion, participants will move onto a 24-mile bike race through the streets of Nantucket, ending at Jetties Beach. Finally, Olympic racers will take to the streets of Nantucket by foot, traversing the island on a 6-mile run to the finish line.

All Proceeds Go To Charity

Not only is the race a great way to enjoy the scenery and put your athleticism to the test, but all proceeds go to a good cause, Nantucket youth charities. The charities provide sporting opportunities, community outreach programs, and scholarships to Nantucket's youth population.

Sponsors and local businesses will also be on hand to really round out the festivities, so whether you are planning to race, or just looking to support the community in its athletic endeavors, you are sure to have a great time.

When the weekend is over, stop at Nantucket Storage Center. The friendly professionals can help you find a storage solution to meet your needs, whether you are looking to store your bicycle or your beach chairs!
