2015 marks the 20th anniversary of the Nantucket Film Festival. This year's film lineup June 24-29 has something for everyone.
If you want to get in on the film action, catch the Opening Night special, The End of the Tour. This film depicts an intimate five-day interview done in 1996 with writer David Foster Wallace at the end of a major book tour. The interviewer, Rolling Stone reporter David Lipsky, spends his time delving into what drives Wallace to create the stories he does.
Opening Day feature film is Disney Pixar's Inside Out. This animated feature looks inside the mind of an 11-year-old boy, Riley. The real stars of the show are the five emotions that help guide Riley. Voiced by noted actors, such as Amy Poehler and Lewis Black, these emotions explore the ups and downs of life. There are two showings for adults and kids to enjoy.
The Film Festival's Centerpiece Film for 2015 is What Happened, Miss Simone? This documentary tells the tale of Nina Simone.
A talented musician, the film takes a walk through Ms. Simone's career starting in the 1950s. As an African-American, her dream of playing Carnegie Hall was thwarted by the racial prejudices of the era. Her side-tracked dream had long lasting impacts on her career path, her personal life, and the role she played in the Civil Rights Movement.
This film is the work of Emmy-award winning director Liz Garbus. It is playing both Thursday and Saturday matinees.
For closing night this year, the NFF is bringing Best of Enemies to the screen. This film focuses on the turbulent opposing personalities of William F. Buckley and Gore Vidal. Both were hired by ABC News in 1968 to bring commentary and perspective to the contentious presidential election. This film explores the personalities of both and the results of their on-screen presence.
There are dozens of other films being presented this year at multiple locations around Nantucket Island. Feature films include a number of independent productions, like The Diary of a Teenaged Girl, Glassland, In My Father's House, and Time Out of Mind.
