Nantucket Bustles With Activity During Race Week 2015

August 6, 2015

August is a crazy month on Nantucket, full of beautiful beach days, lovely events and plenty of fun in the sun – including Nantucket Race Week, an eight-day collection of events.

What Is Nantucket Race Week?

Simply put, Nantucket Race Week is an experience unto itself, completely unique to the island community of Nantucket. Now in its 43rd year, Nantucket Race Week is a series of clean regattas with all proceeds going to Nantucket sailing and youth organizations. Businesses, boatyards and residents from around the Island participate as boaters from around the world come into Nantucket's harbor.

What Are The Top Events?

The event kicks off on Aug. 8 with the One Design Series regatta and is quickly followed by an awards ceremony at 4 p.m. Kiteboarding and Windsurfing Regattas are hosted the following day from Bass Point. Monday, Aug. 10 brings several youth Regatta events, and finishes with a Family BBQ at the Great Harbor Yatch Club. Further youth events can be seen on Tuesday and big boats set sail the following day.

Aug. 13, 14, and 15 are all days full of sailing and racing. The race to Nantucket kicks off the mid-week events. Racers start in Hyannis and race into Nantucket. Friday boasts invitationals and the Shipwreck Ball, one of the premier parties of the week.

Saturday brings professional invitationals, where you can see some of the sport's greatest athletes compete against each other in a race to the finish line. Take a seat on Jetties Beach and prepare for some action.

Nantucket Race Week culminates on Aug. 16 with a parade and a final awards ceremony. The parade, known as the Rainbow Fleet Parade, is fun for the entire family. Residents and visitors of the island are invited to come down to the shore and watch the Rainbow Fleet parade across the water. The parade kicks off the final day at 9:40 a.m., followed at 11 a.m. by the 43rd Annual Opera House Cup Regatta for classic wooden boats. An awards party begins promptly at 6 p.m.

Once you’re done enjoying race week festivities, stop by Nantucket Storage Center, and pack away your summer belongings safely until you are back on the Island again.
