Nantucket's prime season is in full swing, and that means the event calendar is all booked up. If you’re lucky enough to join us the week of July 20, you are in for a treat. The island will be abuzz with the classical sounds of ballet. Join us for one of the many lectures and performances while you enjoy the island culture, and laid-back vibe of the Dance Festival.
The event kicks off with an author talk. Victoria Tennant tells her mother's tale, rising through the ranks as a prima ballerina. Tennant's story is a captivating tale of how ballet came to ingrain itself in American history.
On Tuesday, treat yourself to more ballet immersion through a feature film at the Antheneum. Afterwards, view Ballet 422, a documentary focusing on the New York City Ballet and everything that goes on behind the scenes.
Wednesday brings about classes both in the fine art of ballet, and a conversation about the creative process. Youth Master classes will take place in two groups, and are appropriate for children aged 5-18. Two or more years of ballet experience are recommended for the classes.
Adults can enjoy a conversation on dance, led by experts in choreography, dance and music.
On Thursday, head down to the library around 4 p.m. for a lecture and demonstration by some of the world's top ballet experts. A demonstration of the pieces that are being performed the following day will be part of the experience. This is the perfect way to get up close and personal with some of today's biggest ballet stars.
Friday is the perfect culmination of everything you've learned during the lecture series. In the morning, children are invited to take part in a dance program between 11 a.m. and noon. At 6 p.m., members of the New York City Ballet, American Ballet Theatre and the Miami City Ballet will work together to perform classic and contemporary pieces. Performances from Swan Lake and Bolero will be part of the program.
If you can't make it out on Friday, worry not. Members of the dance companies will be on hand Saturday for an encore performance of all programs featured on July 24.
Come down and enjoy the art of dance, but before you leave the island for the mainland, stop by the friendly professionals at Nantucket Storage Center. They can help you find a storage solution for all of your summer essentials, so the next time you head to the island, you'll be prepared for fun in the sun!
