Enjoy Renowned Ensemble At Boston Pops Charity Concert

August 4, 2015

If you happen to be on Nantucket Aug. 8, stick around on Jetties Beach for the 19th annual Boston Pops benefit concert.

What Is The Event?

Boston Pops on Nantucket is a one-night concert event that takes place on Jetties Beach, Nantucket's most renowned and popular waterfront. The Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra  heads out to the island to shower Nantucket with the soulful sounds of beautiful music. Conducted by Keith Lockhart, the orchestra mixes classic symphony with popular music, all following a pre-organized theme. All proceeds go to the Nantucket Cottage Hospital.

The event was dreamed up by Kathryn Clauss, a local who’s shown great support for Nantucket Cottage Hospital. She came up with the idea in 1997, but few thought she'd be able to pull off such a large event, featuring such a well-known ensemble. Not only did she pull it off in 1997, but she's ensured the event continues each year. Now it serves as the hospital's biggest fundraiser. This year, the event coincides with Nantucket Race Week.

The event starts at 7 p.m. Tickets cost $30 for adults and $10 for children between five and 10 years of age. Children younger than five are free. Purchase tickets through the Nantucket Cottage Hospital website.

Who Are The Boston Pops?

Founded in 1885, the Boston Pops are more than a century old. The orchestra has had a meteoric rise to fame, and have long been dubbed “America's Orchestra.” Originally brought together to create job opportunities to musicians year round, the Boston Pops combine light classical music with today's most popular tunes. The result is a moving, masterful and fun-for-all-ages show.

Keither Lockhart has been spearheading the orchestra since 1995, taking the ensemble in his own direction. Programs often revolve around themes, pulling in current sounds with classical music to create an eclectic and surprising evening of music. If you've never heard them perform in person before, now is your chance.

Once you've packed up after your time on the island, stop by the Nantucket Storage Center. The friendly professionals can help you find a storage solution to keep your belongings safe until you come back to the island for another magical weekend, summer or year.
