Nantucket's Restaurant Week isn't just for adults. Teens can prove their own culinary skill at the 6th Annual Jr. Chef Competition. This event, which takes place alongside Restaurant Week, is a great way for young people to begin an early relationship with food. The event itself will be held on Oct. 6.
Essentially, high school students studying the culinary arts will be divided into teams and pitted against each other. A professional chef will be available to help the teams, and with a secret ingredient, the junior chefs will have to see which team can prepare the most delicious meal. The competition will take place at the Cisco Brewery, with live commentary from Jenny Johnson, who emcees the popular program "TV Diner."
Not only is the competition fun and entertaining for the audience as well as the participants, but the chefs are also cooking for a great cause. The money raised during the event will benefit the Nantucket High School's cooking program, and enable students to purchase cooking supplies for classes and help young chefs pay for financial aid and other school-related expenses.
The students will be preparing a three-course meal live at the event, and each course will be tasted and judged by a panel of esteemed judges to see which team takes home the prize and the notoriety that comes with being the Jr. Chef champion.
If you are planning to visit the island for Restaurant Week, make plans to also attend the Jr. Chef Competition and cheer on these young chefs as they aim towards the tastiest prize on the island. The event will be held from 12-2 p.m.
