Do You Need To Insure Your Boat Or RV?

October 15, 2015

Just like a car or a house, a boat or RV is an investment, and you want to protect an investment any way you can. Insuring your boat or motorhome provides the peace of mind that comes with knowing that if anything were to happen, your recreational vehicle or craft would be covered, and you wouldn't lose the money you've put into it.

Insuring An RV

Since an RV is technically an automobile, you can put your RV directly onto your auto insurance along with your family's other vehicles. Though you can buy a separate policy just for your motorhome, it may save you money to have all of your vehicles on one policy. Make sure that the property you have onboard your RV is also covered.

Insuring A Boat

Out on the water you may not have a care in the world, but in reality, boats can get damaged just like cars or any other vehicle. Take care to protect your boat by investing in boat insurance. Unlike vehicle insurance, boat insurance may be separate from personal vehicle insurance, and if you're not out on your boat a lot, you may just want to take out liability insurance. Some marinas may not allow you to keep your boat there unless your boat is insured, so consider this before you head out for a day on the water.

What Does Homeowners Insurance Cover?

Most homeowners insurance policies cover everything in the home. When you keep your boat or RV at your house, it may be covered under your homeowners insurance policy. However, once you leave the house with your boat or RV, you need auto insurance. Considering everything you spent on these items, it's worth the cost to insure them just to be on the safe side. In a case where you are financing your boat or RV, your lender may require you to keep insurance anyway.

What Can I Insure?

You may have a small craft, an odd-sized boat, or even a Jet Ski. Can you insure these items? The answer is yes. Most insurance companies will insure all of your watercraft in case of an accident. There are usually different types of coverage that may alter the cost of your policy, including personal injury and damage to your watercraft. You may also have the option to add fishing equipment and personal property to your boat insurance just so you are completely covered.
