Cheap, Shelf-Stable Foods For Dorm Life

September 1, 2015

Anyone who lives in a dorm room or studio apartment needs nonperishable foods that take up very little space. Here's a list of shelf-stable foods that do not require a space-eating refrigerator or freezer.

Canned and Freeze-dried Fruits and Vegetables

While fresh fruits and vegetables go bad within a week, the dried, freeze-dried and canned versions will last for months or longer. Freeze-dried options include snap peas, cranberries, raisins, apricots, pineapple and mango. These items really are the perfect food for college students and studio apartment dwellers as they are rich in nutrients and stand the test of time.

Grains are affordable and tend to take up little space. Nonperishable grains include cereals, granola and crackers. Each will maintain its integrity and taste for an extended period of time. Add in the fact that most grains are easily portable and they make the ideal food for dormers.

While most people immediately think of meat when the word “protein” is mentioned, there are sources of protein available that do not require refrigeration. Stock up on nut proteins and you won't regret it. Peanut butter is one example. Other examples of shelf-stable proteins include almond butter, almonds, whole peanuts, walnuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, macadamia nuts, pre-made nut mixes and jerky.

Beans are an excellent shelf-stable food. They can be purchased during supermarket sales at incredibly low costs. They'll last for years if kept properly sealed. The best shelf-stable beans are garbanzo, black eyed peas, pinto, lima, adzuki, kidney and mung.

You can pick up a large amount of pasta for very little money at most supermarkets. When you spot one of those 10 for $10 deals, it is time to stock up on your favorite types of pasta. You can eat certain types of pasta five plus years after the purchase date.

If you are short on space, don't try to cram all your stuff into your tiny dorm room or studio apartment. You can free up critical living space by storing your excess items at Move It Self Storage. We offer an array of storage styles for personal, business, military and student use.
