10 Common Moving Mistakes To Avoid

June 26, 2015

Moving is always stressful, but it is more stressful when you are unprepared for the move. We've collected ten of the most common moving mistakes people make, and added in ways to combat them, so your moving process will be as smooth and easy as possible.

  1. You didn't get enough quotes: Check with at least three different moving companies before you make a final decision. Get quotes from each and compare their services before signing a contract.

  2. Not booking in advance: Check with movers several weeks in advance of your anticipated move. There are “rush” periods for movers, so you'll want to book a mover early if you are moving during peak season.

  3. Not purging the waste before moving: Over the course of weeks leading up to your move, start purging your home of things you don't need. You may want to take things to a consignment shop or have a garage sale ahead of your move.

  4. Forgetting to check your movers regulation on firearms and alcohol: Moving liquor and firearms are touchy subjects. In fact, most movers will not be able to transport these items. Check ahead of time with your mover so you are not surprised on moving day.

  5. Overlooking the pets: Moving pets can be stressful, both for you and them. To avoid added stress, make arrangements for your pets prior to your move. Make sure they are up-to-date on shots and have all of their paperwork.

  6. Forgetting to check on the mover's insurance: You may assume that a mover must have insurance to cover broken items, but their insurance may not cover the complete cost of broken valuables. Ask about supplemental insurance options.

  7. Not packing an essential “survival kit:” There is nothing worse than getting to your destination and realizing all of your living items are packed away in boxes. Create a “survival” kit ahead of packing up all of your items.

  8. Thinking you can do it all alone: Many people make the mistake of thinking they can DIY their move, or just move on the fly. This is a recipe for disaster.

  9. You forgot about the plants: Plants are subject to regulations when you are moving between states. Check state regulations and be sure to move them into non-breakable pots before the move.

  10. You forgot to make a list: Things can easily get lost in the shuffle when moving, so do make a list of all the items as they are packed and check it twice before you embark on your moving journey.
